What Does Recent Research Show?

A recent Marshall University study found that repeated alcohol exposure in adolescent rats changed how astrocytes, which are support cells in the brain, communicated with other brain cells. These changes continued into adulthood, even after the rats stopped drinking.

The study does not prove that the same effects happen in humans, but it gives scientists more information about how alcohol may affect the developing brain.

The adolescent brain is still developing, with areas involved in planning, attention, memory, emotional regulation, and decision-making continuing to mature into the twenties. This ongoing development may make the brain particularly sensitive to alcohol exposure.

Human research has associated heavy or binge drinking during adolescence with changes in brain structure and communication between brain regions. Alcohol can also interfere with memory and judgment in the short term, while repeated heavy use has been associated with longer-term effects on cognitive and emotional functioning.
